The New City Inn London Hotel, with Aarte Consulting: Partners in Interior Design
Our London Agents Aarte Consulting in association with First Light have recently completed a flagship interior design project with the Hotel Group City Inn. The new building in London Westminster represents a stunning move forwards in contemporary hotel design, and the Aarte / First Light partnership were commissioned to produce a unique set of modernist and abstract images for some of the interiors. To look around the interiors, click on the image below to access the virtual photographic tour created by Philip Meehan.
Aarte and First Light are also working with the Government's Trade Partners initiative to promote Interior Design with major Dubai Hotel Groups and companies. Aarte Consulting offers a unique consultancy service providing design solutions for corporate interiors with a firm emphasis on the artistic and the aesthetic. Beautiful environments help to relieve tension, can be an excellent PR tool and can reflect a modern, people friendly atmosphere.

'In f.light' merchandise:
For the
latest in artistic and technical innovation, we have
launched a new range of products created in our digital studio. The
First Light Calendar 2004 is now on sale at £5.00
through the Gallery, or by mail order (add £2.50 p&p). The
calendar contains some of the best worldwide imagery from our
ever expanding photographic archive, including Amsterdam and
Morocco.
The Lost Horizon is a double CD of music and
sound effects, designed to be played on two separate CD players
on repeat play. As each CD is of different lengths there will be
musical accidents and constantly new interpretations
as the loops progress and will sound completely different when
nearer to one pair of speakers than another. You can hear the
music at the First Light Gallery, but we also thought the calming
influence of sound, waves, seagulls etc could be played when in
need of contemplation and relaxation at home. The music was
created in the First Light sound studio by Mark Nelson whose
career began in music in the early seventies. Since becoming a
First Light photographer in 1980 he has run a parallel career
creating music for films shown worldwide. The Lost Horizon forms
the first part of a new musical collection called Music for
the Urban Interior, on sale now at the Brighton gallery
price £14.95 (mail order add £2.50 p&p). The inspiration
for the Lost Horizon includes various ambient pieces by Brian
Eno, the Centre for Friends of the Western Buddhist Order
Brighton, ECM Records and the twilight horizon from Brighton
beach.
Our aim is to provide a suite of creative products available for sale through the gallery and later in our 'in f.light' online store. For enquiries and orders for our merchandise, please use the Contact Us section.

Landmark Photography from the United States and Canada
First Light Photographer Steve Parry has returned from Canada and the United States with exciting new photography for our collection. This includes landmark imagery such as the Golden Gate Bridge under time-lapse photography, the famous Highway 1, San Francisco and the atmospheric fishing villages along the West Coast. The image here forms part of a set of modernist abstracts shot in the city of Vancouver. This new collection will be uploaded to our site over the next few weeks.

The Brighton West Pier: From Splendour to Collapse
The First Light Picture Library holds 20 years of archive material, up to the recent dramatic collapse and conflagration on this celebrated pier. We have recently added the last in the Brighton panoramic triptych series entitled 'End of the Pier', shown below. Brighton's West Pier has been a mysterious and haunting backdrop to many coastline images sold through the First Light Picture Library.

Morocco: Marrakesh to the Atlas Mountains, Autumn 2002
Three
photographers from First Light travelled to Morocco
at the end of 2002 to reveal a rich tapestry of colour and
tradition. Marrakesh or 'The Red City', so called because of its
deep red sandstone buildings, is an artist's city full of
sensuality and mysticism. The Souk is the vibrant commercial area
of the City, a labyrinth of colours, sights and sounds.
Navigating through the intense activity can be exasperating as
you experience sensory overload. There are few signposts to guide
you, and as a westerner you are constantly approached for the
sale of myriad items. The scent is powerful, there are numerous
animals of every description. The locals are highly sensitive to
photography of themselves, so shots were grabbed quickly and
discreetly - there was a need to work almost invisibly, and
in some cases agreements were made for
some posed portraits. Some of the images returned were in a
photojournalistic style, with the Hasselblad panoramic camera
providing a filmic quality to the pictures. Reportage on the life
of the people seemed a clear approach to understanding this
country. It could also be said that the essence of Morocco may be
captured in the detail - the doorways, stairs and archways.
Abstracts were very favourable amongst the lamps, fabrics and
jewellery as well as the long shadows cast by the City's outline.
The traditional Riad, an accommodation with no windows on the
outside, is built around a beautiful courtyard with a fountain.
Laden with lamps, incense and flowers, this gave a particularly
Eastern flavour of looking inwards. The Tajine, a local dish like
a steamed stew of meat or vegetables was served in a clay pot
with a cold beer. A few hours rest was obtained before being
woken up by the blast of loudspeakers from the minarets at 4.a.m.
- the call to prayer. This ethereal chanting drifted across every
corner of the City from the various mosques. The Menara Gardens
on the outskirts of Marrakesh revealed an impressive sweep of
North African grandeur with stunning reflections. The precarious
drive to the Atlas Mountains gave the chance for roadside images
tinged with motion and blur. The barrenness of the Berber
villages, unchanged for hundreds of years, was austere in nature
with many houses built into the side of the mountains.
Ironically, you could easily come across a rock star's residence
here, hidden away from prying eyes.
